Yuan Dynasty
The Yuan Dynasty was 1 of 4 Mongol khanates. Yuan Dynasty was ruled by Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan. Kublai Khan managed the entire in 1260 but in 1279 he had focused on fulfilling the goal of his grandfather, to conquer all China. The Yuan Dynasty lasted until 1368, when it was overthrown. It was an important era for Yuan Dynasty. Kublai Khan united China for the first time in more 300 years and the control forced by the Mongols actually opened all of China to better foreign contacts and trade. Finally, Kublai Khan and his successors condoned Chinese culture and adjusted the system of government. He also abandoned the Mongolian steppes for China, he also really liked living in a luxurious way of a Chinese emperor. Kublai Khan also maintained a beautiful at Shangdu, not only that he built a new square-walled capital in modern day Beijing. Moving the capital from Mongolia to China was an indication that Kublai intended to make his mark as emperor of China. He was not satisfied with conquering China, so he tried to extend his rule to japan twice. The first attempt was in 1274, the great Khan sent many fleets to attack but the Mongols forced Koreans to do everything possible to avoid the destruction, the first attempt ended as a failure. In the second attempt, the Mongols were lucky and bypassed the gret Kublai Khan due to an intense typhoon in which the Japanese called the kamikaze or "divine wind". Kublai Khan was still an able commander. He restored the Grand Canal and extended it 135 miles north to Beijing, along his banks he created a paved highway that ran some 1,100 miles, from Hangzhou to Beijing. This all helped and established the north with a steady supply of grains and goods. Foreign trade rised under Kublai Khan, the Mongol Peace made the caravan routes across Central Asia safe for trade and travel. Traders brought things such as Chinese silk, porcelain, printing, gunpowder, the compass, paper currency, and cards through the Silk Roads and other routes. Marco Polo was also an important man that served for Kublai Khan for a good 17 years. Marco recorded the practical workings of Kublai's government and aspects of Chinese life, he even talked about the burning of "black stones" (coal). Kublai Khan soon died in 1294 and soon after his death, the Yuan Dynasty began to fade.
