The Sui Dynasty lasted from 581 to 618. There were only two emperors. Wendi declared himself the first emperor. Wendi's greatest accomplishment was the Grand Canal. The Grand canal aided the economy by increasing trade and transportation. The grand canal connected the Huang He and the Chang Jiang which was an important route for trade between the northern cities and the southern rice producing region of the Chang delta. Peasants rebuilt the great wall, and built a 1,000 mile water way. That frustrated the people which lead them to turn against the dynasty. In 618 the people rebelled.
