The Khmer Empire is now what is currently Cambodia, was for centuries the main power on the Southeast Asian mainland. By the 800's, the Khmer gained enough power to become it's own Empire. The empire reached it's peak of power at around 1200. The Khmer constructed elaborate irrigation systems and waterways, this helped tremendously to Khmer and helped them now grow up to 3 or 4 cups of rice a year in an area that could've only grew 1 cup. Rice cultivation assisted the Khmer in becoming prosperous. In Khmer's capital, Angkor, many rulers built large-scaled complexes. An example of one would be Angkor Wat, one of the greatest architectural achievements. This complex was enormous, nearly a square mile and was built a symbolic mountain dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. The complex was also used as an observatory for the Khmer.
