In the late 1100s, Japan's two most powerful clans were fighting for power. For almost 30 years, the Minamoto family would win. The emperor gave one of the Minamoto leaders by the name of Yoritomo the title of shogun in 1192. Which is also refered to as Supreme General of the Emperor's Army. The Shogun basically had the power do do whatever he wanted with the military. He had all the control over the army. Following tradition of the Japanese government, the emperor remained still reigning from Kyoto. However, the center of power was at the shogun’s military headquarters at Kamakura. The 1200's are refered to as the Kamakura Shogunate. The Japanese government norm was that the Shogun would rule behind the scenes while there would be a cover person as the face for the people. That Japanese norm is still used today in modern-day Japan. These Shoguns were so strong that they won the multiple invasions sent by the Mongol Leader Kublai Khan in 1274 and 1281. Although they were won the multiple invasions, this drained the shoguns’ money supply. Which resulted in the Shogun losing his money and the government not paying him.
